Caldwell Station Apartments

The first its kind in Allegheny County: Private/Public Ownership

Caldwell Station Apartments

In 1996, the Wilmerding Borough Council requested the CIAC to develop the last remaining parcel in the Wilmerding Redevelopment Plan. The parcel had been vacant for several years and there was no interest shown by outside developers to get involved. The Borough Council liked St. Joseph Apartments, developed by the CIAC, and was hoping the CIAC could replicate that type of housing construction.

This last remaining parcel was previously occupied by the Philaretic Society which had a three-story building on the site. The first floor was occupied by office space and retail business. The second floor had Society Club rooms. The third floor was a banquet and dance hall. The parcel was composed of the 500 block of Station Street and the 100 block of Caldwell Avenue.

The CIAC developed what was a “first of its kind” in Allegheny County; an apartment building owned by both a public and private entity. This was only the thirteenth time this was done in the entire United States. six apartments, in the 18-apartment building, are owned by the Allegheny County Housing Authority (ACHA.)

Caldwell Station Apartments opened in August of 1998 and several of the current residents became residents at that time.

Caldwell Station Apartments is a three story, brick on block, masonry building with a concrete, dox plank, floor system. The eighteen, two-bedroom apartments are approximately 790 square feet each. Each apartment is equipped with high efficiency central heat and air conditioning, one full bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen, including a range and refrigerator. The building has separate security entrances on both Caldwell Avenue and Station Street. Each floor of the apartment building is equipped with a coin-operated laundry room. The grounds are nicely landscaped with an outdoor seating area for residents. A number of units are designed and equipped for complete handicap accessibility. Off-street parking is also provided for residents’ automobiles.
